About Eddy Edgar
Eddy Edgar is my actual name, and my artistic journey began as a young child with the two women who raised me. Rose and Sylvia, my grandma and mom. Rose was a honky tonk piano player who toured in a popular cover band in the 1940s. Through her, I fell in love with music. As a teenager, I began studying album cover art and how it was created. Studying influential artists and photographers became a passionate hobby for me.
Sylvia was a watercolour artist, architectural draftsperson, and commercial designer employed by the Eaton Centre in Toronto in the 1960s. My mom encouraged me to explore nature, taught me analytical observation, drawing, painting, and how to complete studies of other artists.
In the mid-2000s, Capital Records in Los Angeles found my photography online and purchased it to use for a holiday compilation album called Shimmy Down the Chimney that Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss and many other artists were featured on. Being found and paid by a major label increased my confidence for earning a living. Indie bands hired me to create album covers and posters. Coffee became vital.
In 2012, members of Russian band Pussy Riot were jailed for singing a song about Vladimir Putin in Moscow's main cathedral. I was invited to be a contributing illustrator for an art book called Let’s Start a Pussy Riot which was sold to raise funds for legal fees for the band. In 2014, Yoko Ono promoted the book at her Meltdown Festival in London, UK.
My graphic design and illustration work has appeared on The Guardian, Huffington Post, Homoground, NME, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and many other media sites.
In 2023, I began writing and drawing a graphic novel, which is an ongoing personal project.
Presently, I’m confronting my consumption habits in my work with traditional fine art materials by experimenting with creating my own pigments - my first being an ink from fallen mulberries and creating my own art easels from reclaimed wooden materials.
